Can my dogs long nails end up hurting her ?

my dogs nails are getting really long ...like they curve and everything ...last time that i took her to the vet about 8 months ago he sayed there was no need for them to be cut ...im plaining on taking her back in 2 months but i cant right now because i dont have the money ...my doggy is very strong willed and i know for a FACT she wont let me cut them ...my question is with dogs can the nails get long enough that it causes some type of problem or causes them pain?stupid question i know but i need an honest answer..its the two front paws ..Can my dogs long nails end up hurting her ?
Yes they can grow long enough to cause the foot to not sit flat against the floor. They have to be pretty long though. Aside from that there isn't much danger.

But they DO need to be trimmed. I can't believe any vet would have told you otherwise unless they really aren't that long.

I had a dog years ago when I lived in the city, daily walks on the sidewalk and runs in the cement tennis court was all he needed to keep his nails in good shape.

Now I have three lazy house dogs who only get walks in my grassy yard. And they DO need their nails trimmed.

Vets are expensive I know. But you can learn how to do this yourself.

Pick up a good dog nail clipper. (Not a human one, get a dog one.) Also pick up a container of quick stop. This is in case you cut too deep and the nail bleeds. It will stop it fast. First time you trim it's easy to cut too much.

You said your dogs won't let you??? Well start getting them used to being touched on their feet. Every day, spend time holding a paw, then another, praise every time your dog lets you. A treat after a session might not hurt. This will eventually be something your dog comes to enjoy.

First time you trim, just take off a very small amount. best to under cut than have to use that quick stop.

Do this every week and that blood vein in their nail will reseed.

You can do this. Can my dogs long nails end up hurting her ?
yes it can be very painful for the dog. my vet says if you can hear them clicking (on tile floor, wood, etc.) then they need to be trimmed.Walking your dog daily is natures fingernail file..It shouldn`t cost that much. only 5.00 at my vet for all4..
Definally get them done. If you cant do it out of fear of cutting the vein have someone else do it but if they are that long you might have to. What happends as the nail starts to curl it will put the animal in pain. Then if it starts to grow under the weight of the animal it puts the animal into more pain because hes walking on it. Plus when you finally cut it the longer it get you will have to cut the vein which means you might have to put it to sleep to cut it because of cutting the vein.
I cannot imagine a vet telling you not to cut long nails. Those nails can distort their feet, it is painful and it alters the way they walk. All sorts of problems can develop. Most vet or groomers will clip them for you for about $10. Call around and get some prices. Even call your local ASPCA and see if they will do it for you.

As the nail grows the quick moves down the nail and there is a greater chance of clipping into the quick which is extremely painful and the nails will bleed.

Get them cut. Walking them on concrete sidewalks does help them to wear down naturally. So go for some long walks on rough concrete and you both will benefit.
I had to get my dogs nails cut. They got really long and she started limping alot and wasn't being very active. A few days after they were cut, she was running and playing like she was a puppy and she is almost 7 yrs old!
yes it can have them clipped
Yes it can cause them pain if they get too long. It is also more difficut for them to walk too. If your dogs dew claw nails are not trimed they can grow into the dogs skin too.

I would not wait 2 more months to have them trimed. You can bring your dog into your vets just to have this done. Get your dogs nails trimed soon. Then if you can't do it make regulasr visitis to your vet to have them done. Or a groomers just to do it. It is very inexpensive to have this done and healthier for your dogs feet!
Dogs nails require regular maintenance. They can wear them down by taking walks on sidewalks, digging and such, but even an active dog is still going to require some trimming, because the nails will always continue to grow. Long nails can snag on carpeting and even be pulled out (very painful!) Also, overgrown nails can be very uncomfortable to walk on.

The easiest way to tell if you dog needs a nail trim is if you hear clicking when they walk on a tile or wood floor. If you can hear them, they are overgrown.

A groomer or a vet only charges a few dollars for a nail appointment (I think it's $6 at my vet). Ask them to show you the correct way to restrain your dog and do the trimming yourself in the future. A good set of dog nail clippers costs less than $10 and they are well worth the investment. If you have a friend or someone who can help you hold her, nail trimming is very easy to do when you feel confident enough to do it yourself.
by this time, you are either going to have to take the dog to a vet, have the dog sedated, and have them cut really short (all the nails will bleed, which is why they sedate them), or take the dog to a groomer who will have to do them over time. even if you cut right to the quick, the nails will still be long (the longer you leave the nails without being cut, the longer the quik grows as well. this is why nails should be done frequently to keep them short.). like everyone mentioned, this does hurt dogs. you need to take the dog to a groomer asap. i dont care if you have to try every groomer in town, find someone who can do his nails. they charge 10 bucks tops you cant tell me you dont have 10 bucks
You misunderstood the vet, nails that are left for 8 months will curve and it will become painful for your dog to walk. The last I heard it was $12 to have nails clipped at the vet's office and less at the groomers, although with nails left as long as your dog's it might be more. I can't believe you cannot find $15 - $20 to have your dog's nails clipped, unless again you're misunderstanding and thinking it's much more.
yes the dew claw can grow into the skin and its very painfull!!and if you dont get your dogs nails clipped regularly the vein grows further and they cant cut them as well.you can take your dog to petsmart or a place the same and get it done for about $10.00.vets would consider that negelect!!
it can be very painful for a dog to have long nails, they also can curl under and cut the paw. Take the dog to a groomer, it's cheaper than a vet and they will cut your dog's nails for you. I have a cat that doesn't like her nails cut, so I have to take her to the groomers at Petsmart. Same thing, long nails can hurt animals. Makes it hard for them to walk also.
